Fishhooks Wilderness
Nature
Fishhooks Wilderness is a 10,500-acre protected area in southeastern Arizona, about 30 miles northwest of Safford, along the edge of the San Carlos Indian Reservation. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, it is designated as a wilderness area. Access from the Safford area follows roads along the north side of the Gila River before turning onto unmarked dirt tracks near Diamond Bar Ranch. Because the boundary touches the road in places and is only occasionally marked, visitors must take care in entering the area. Anyone crossing reservation land must first secure a recreation permit from the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation.
