Two miles east stood Fort Pickens, where Capt. Morgan Darnall's Company A, 10th West Virginia Infantry, Vols. enrolled and built the fort in 1861-62, and where Capt. Bainbridge mustered the company into the Union Army on March 13, 1862. The fort was burned in 1864.
