The Wesleyan Quadrilateral is named for John Wesley (1703-1981), founder of Methodism and one of the great theologians and critical thinkers in the history of Christianity. Its basic structure begins with Scripture and Wesley's emphasis on the primacy of Scripture as the foundation for our knowledge of God. Wesley also emphasizes the importance of human reason as God's intention that Christianity be reasonable and worthy of respect, the importance of tradition in showing how the great saints of the church provide guidance for life today, and the dual importance of understanding individual and corporate experiences of God. Together, Scripture, Reason, Tradition and Experience provide the theological framework needed to live a meaningful and Godly life as humans.
