Erratic Rock State Natural Site in Oregon’s Willamette Valley preserves a striking geological remnant of the prehistoric Missoula Floods. Its centerpiece is a 40-short-ton glacial erratic of argillite, believed to be about 600 million years old, carried south in an iceberg and left on a hilltop about 250 feet above the Yamhill Valley as floodwaters receded. The rock is described as the largest glacial erratic in the Willamette Valley and the only one of its type found outside Canada. More notable for geology than recreation, the site offers a short paved trail and broad valley views while illustrating how Ice Age floods reshaped the Pacific Northwest.
