Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge, about 10 miles west of Salem in northwestern Oregon, protects a remnant of the older Willamette Valley landscape of cropland, oak hills, grasslands, wetlands, and open water amid land long altered by farming and urban growth. Established in 1965, it is managed to support wintering geese, especially the dusky Canada goose, whose limited range makes protected feeding and resting habitat in the valley especially important. The refuge also supports many other birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and the largest surviving population of the endangered Fender’s blue butterfly, while public access is limited in winter to protect wildlife.
