William Franklin Goodrich, the son of an early Sabine County family, graduated in the first class of the University of Texas Law School in 1886. The next year, he married Bertha Sutor of Travis County and returned to Hemphill, where he worked as a lawyer, county attorney, and abstractor. After buying this lot in 1889, the couple built their home about 1894. The transitional style house features Queen Anne details, including a conical turret, wrapped porch, dormer windows, and hipped and gabled rooflines. It remained in the Goodrich family for many years.
