Before the Civil War, Lost Creek in Indiana was a junction on an important line of the Underground Railroad. Enslaved people fleeing from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia came to Vigo County, where Quakers, Indians, and freed Negroes lived in Lost Creek Township. They were given shelter and guided to Cass County, Michigan, where they found shelter in Vandalia and were then guided to Canada. In 1847, the pursuit of freedom seekers by Kentuckians led to legal action and increased tension between North and South.
