Stoystown, with a population of 400, had a speed limit of 15 mph in 1924. About a block east stands one of the original Lincoln Highway cement markers. In 1928, Boy Scouts helped install more than 3,000 of these markers across the United States. Five boys chosen as the finest Scouts in the United States joined a caravan that left New York City on July 4th and traveled the Lincoln Highway to its western end at the Golden Gate. Along the way, daily demonstrations taught camping, policing, swimming, first aid, directing traffic, and other scout activities. On a signal from New York headquarters, the Scouts simultaneously re-signed the Lincoln Highway with new concrete posts made for that purpose, uniformly marking more than 3,000 miles of highway in one day.
