Stissing Mountain, a prominent peak in northern Dutchess County, rises sharply above the surrounding landscape and is especially striking along its steep eastern escarpment. Its form and prominence come from its geology: an older gneiss core was thrust over younger rock layers during Ordovician faulting, and later erosion removed softer rocks, leaving the harder mountain standing out. Fields of gneiss talus at the base reflect the slope’s steepness. Near the summit, a steel fire lookout tower built in 1933 was staffed beginning in 1935, later restored, and by 2023 was open to the public by hiking trail. Culturally, the mountain is usually regarded as distinct from nearby upland ranges.
