Tellico Plains High School became a significant part of Tellico Plains as county court approval in 1911 provided $2,000.00 for a new school serving grades 9-12 on land donated by Mr. C.A. Scott. Many students walked to school, while others who lived too far away could board in on-campus dormitories. The first TPHS boys’ basketball team was established in 1913 with a basketball from a Sears and Roebuck catalog, and a gymnasium was built in 1916 after sports had previously been played on outside dirt floors. In July 1928, the town transferred all school property to the county school board. In 1938, the first-generation building was demolished, leaving the town without a school, so vacant areas were used for different grade levels, with some classes held in churches and others in businesses and city offices. A new building was constructed in 1938-39 for $168,000.00, and its grand opening was held in the C.A. Scott auditorium, reflecting Mr. Scott’s role in opening the new school building. In 1966, the high school moved to the location of the current Tellico Plains Junior High in a building constructed with state-of-the-art equipment, and lights were added to the football field the following year. The building constructed in the fall of 1938 then became Tellico Plains Elementary / Junior High for grades K-8, but it was destroyed by a fire in 2005. In 1996, Tellico Plains High School moved to 9180 TN-68, where the campus included football, baseball, and softball fields, a weight room, an alumni center, and later a barn, field, functioning green house, and vocational shop room for the agricultural department, and the building still stands today.
