Three of the four remaining charcoal kilns from an original sixteen stand here. The beehive-shaped kilns were built of brick, designed to be 20 feet high and 20 feet in diameter, with walls plastered inside and out to a thickness of a foot or more. Heavy steel cables bound the structures, and thick stone and brick foundations supported them on a shelf cut into the slope of the draw. Each kiln had two doors for loading wood. None of the four remaining kilns survives in original condition, as bricks have been pried away, thinning the walls, and some top openings have caved in. The area also contained many open pit kilns, which were large pits filled with wood, set on fire, and covered with dirt so the covering served the same purpose as the brick kiln; if the dirt caved in and the burning wood was not quickly recovered, the entire 40 to 50 cords would burn up.
