Laurel Creek Covered Bridge, near Lillydale in West Virginia, was built in 1910 and stands out as the state's shortest covered bridge at 34 feet 6 inches long and 13 feet 2½ inches wide. With red-painted wood siding and a galvanized metal roof, it retains the traditional look of rural covered bridges. Its importance also comes from its rarity: by 1981 only 17 covered bridges remained in West Virginia. As one of those few survivors, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
