On the afternoon of July 16, 1863, Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan and his main column of Confederate raiders entered Jasper with prisoners captured at Stoney Ridge, including Joseph McDougal, who had argued with his captors on the way and openly expressed strong Union beliefs. After arriving, Morgan sought a guide to the next town, and when no one volunteered, the raiders seized McDougal and ordered him to serve. When he refused, they tied him up, placed him in a boat on the Scioto River, and shot at him until another guide stepped forward; McDougal was killed in the process. He was buried in the old Jasper Methodist Church cemetery. Morgan's Raiders then turned violent in Jasper, looting stores, burning several canal boats, crossing the Ohio & Erie Canal Bridge, and burning the bridge behind them.
