Cass Scenic Railroad State Park preserves the railroad, company town, and mountain landscape created by West Virginia’s logging industry at Cass. Founded in 1901 to support timber cutting, Cass grew around a huge sawmill and a railroad built up Back Allegheny Mountain to reach spruce and later hardwood forests, with camps and settlements spreading along the line. Logging continued under successive companies until the mill and railroad closed in 1960. Local preservation efforts saved the line from scrapping, and tourist excursions began in 1963. Today the park features steam-powered excursions, historic locomotives and log cars, restored company houses, and exhibits that preserve the broader world of the lumber town.
