Green Bank Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia, is a major U.S. center for radio astronomy within the National Radio Quiet Zone. Established in 1956, it began observations in 1958 and served as NRAO headquarters until 1966 before later becoming an independent nonprofit in 2016 under Associated Universities, Inc., with partial NSF support and a partnership with West Virginia University. Its instruments include the 100-meter Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope, along with several other active telescopes. The site also holds an important scientific legacy through Project Ozma, the 300 Foot Telescope, and the landmark Reber Radio Telescope.
