A block dated 1916 came from one of the original buildings on this site, the Farmers and Merchants State Bank of Verona. The bank became most notably known for a 1927 murder and robbery in which cashier H.C. Bjone was shot and 3-4 thousand dollars were taken; his body was found the next day locked in the vault, and the criminal was never captured. The bank vault remained in use in one way or another until the building was demolished. In the 1930's Tom Sabby owned the building and ran a bar and restaurant there. Erv and Delores Henniger purchased the building and business in 1952, when it became known as Erv's Bar, where many games of pool and cards were played. From 1972 until demolition, it was known as Bob's Bar and was owned by Bob Maley. In the 1940's it also served as the bus stop, and for many years it housed the only pay phone in Verona.
