St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church

1
The first church in White Bear Lake was built in Cottage Park in 1861 on the site of the present Episcopal Cemetery. It was originally erected by local citizens and Native Americans with money raised by Mr. and Mrs. John Aubrey. In 1874, the church was moved across the frozen lake on a platform of logs, then slowly moved up the hillside to street level with a system of blocks and tackle and timbers, and finally placed at a new location at First and Clark Ave. The old church was torn down in 1925 and replaced with the present building in 1926.
