Mormon Mesa is a broad upland in southern Nevada between the Virgin and Muddy rivers near Overton, rising south of their confluence and extending north toward the Mormon and East Mormon mountains. It is significant both as a desert landform and as protected habitat. The Mormon Mesa Area of Critical Environmental Concern encompasses about 149,000 acres to protect the endangered desert tortoise within creosote-bursage scrub and mixed Mojave shrub communities, and part of the Delamar Mountains Wilderness Area lies within it. Mormon Mesa also became a landmark of land art in 1969 when Michael Heizer created Double Negative on its edge, linking the plateau to contemporary art as well as conservation.
