Pleasant Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Benson County, North Dakota, near the community of Pleasant Lake, is part of the Devils Lake Wetland Management District. It is a limited-interest refuge, a form established in the 1930s and 1940s as declining waterfowl populations and New Deal programs during the Great Depression shaped conservation efforts. Here, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manages wildlife habitat through an easement on privately owned land rather than owning the property outright. Although the area is closed to public access, wildlife may be viewed from nearby roads. Its lake, Broken Bone Lake, preserves a name linked to breaking bison bones for marrow used in pemmican.
