Turtle Mountain is a broad, wooded plateau on the North Dakota-Manitoba border, rising above the surrounding prairie with forests, lakes, wetlands, and notable wildlife. Lake Metigoshe and Boundary Butte are among its prominent features. The region is the traditional territory of the Plains Ojibwe and part of the Métis homeland, and later border making, settlement, and land policies displaced many Indigenous people and reshaped communities including the Turtle Mountain Chippewa and Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa. Turtle Mountain also saw coal mining from the late 19th century into the mid-20th century. Today it is valued for recreation, protected landscapes, and its layered natural and cultural history.
