On July 25, 1863, Gen. John H. Morgan, in command of Confederate troops, passed through this village and proceeded northward by way of McIntire and Cross Creek Valleys and Wintersville while being pursued by Gen. James M. Shackelford and the 14th Illinois Cavalry, 1st Kentucky Cavalry, 9th Michigan Cavalry, 11th Michigan Battery, 86th Ohio Mounted Infantry, and 2nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry.
