William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon’s Willamette Valley protects habitat crucial to wintering dusky Canada geese, which nest on Alaska’s Copper River Delta and winter largely here. The refuge preserves a rare cross-section of the valley’s former landscape, including the largest remaining tract of native wet prairie, along with oak savanna, upland prairie, creeks, bottomland ash forest, old-growth bigleaf maple, and wetlands. Its management restores habitat diversity, supports species such as Oregon chub and Bradshaw’s desert parsley, and works with local farmers to provide food and resting areas for geese and other waterfowl. Within its boundaries stands the Fiechter House, completed in 1857.
