Alsea Falls is a 30-foot waterfall on the South Fork Alsea River in Oregon’s central Coast Range, about 13 miles west of Monroe. Set within the Alsea Falls Trailhead and Recreation Site, it lies in a forested landscape accessed by a Bureau of Land Management Back Country Byway and is surrounded by old-growth Douglas fir and western redcedar. The waterfall’s name, like the river’s, may come from Alsi, said to be a corruption of Alsea for the Native people who lived near the river’s mouth. It remains both a natural landmark and a well-known recreation stop in this part of the Coast Range.
