Indians once roamed this land of crystal streams. Later, pioneer farmers came and called it Oction. In 1889 Jay Gould built the Iron Mountain Railroad through here, and in 1892 he built the Big Creek Sawmill, the largest pine sawmill in the world. The town was renamed to honor the manager of the mill, Capt. J.W. Pollock.
