Shingle Creek, once a popular swimming hole, supplied the water for the first swimming pool at Webber Park after the land was acquired for the park in 1908 and the creek was dammed. When Charles C. and Mary Webber offered to build a children's playground in memory of their young son, Superintendent Theodore Wirth suggested a pool instead, and they agreed. The John Deere Webber Memorial Field House and Baths opened in 1910, with a two-story building that included an upper-level reading room, warming house, and playground shelter, and the pool water came directly from the creek. In 1927, the pool and building were reconstructed, the water supply was connected to city water, and funding again came from the Webbers, prompting the park's name change from Camden Park to Charles C. Webber Park. For 17 years, the pool had been neither filtered nor chlorinated. Rebuilt in 1980, it remains the city's only full-sized outdoor pool. A wall surrounded the pool because separate swimming hours for men and boys and for girls and women led officials to try to prevent boys from peeking, but Theodore Wirth concluded that supervised mixed bathing was quite permissible, and the wall remained until the pool building and library were reconstructed in 1980.
