Alester Garden Furman, Jr., a fourth-generation descendant of Richard Furman, the spiritual founder of Furman University, served many terms on the university's Board of Trustees. As chairman, he was instrumental in moving Furman University to its present location and in determining the quality and design of the campus and buildings.
