Buchanan State Forest, a 71,683-acre public forest in south-central Pennsylvania, emerged from land heavily damaged during the nineteenth-century lumber era, when logging, iron operations, and wildfire left the landscape depleted. After state forest policy shifted in the 1890s, the Commonwealth acquired cutover tracts that became this largely second-growth forest, with later recovery aided by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The forest also preserves layered traces of the region’s past, including remnants of the Forbes Road, an unfinished South Penn Railroad aqueduct, and the abandoned Sideling Hill Tunnel. Its significance lies in combining ecological recovery with enduring military, industrial, transportation, and conservation history.
