My Old Kentucky Home State Park in Bardstown centers on Federal Hill, the Rowan family mansion long linked with Stephen Foster’s “My Old Kentucky Home, Good Night.” Planned by Judge John Rowan and Ann Lytle, the house grew from an 1795 rear ell to an 1818 Federal-style mansion built with slave labor on a large working farm. A political and social center during the Rowans’ occupancy, it later became a historic site acquired in 1922 and dedicated to the Commonwealth in 1923, entering the state park system in 1936. Today it preserves Rowan family history, interprets enslaved people’s lives, and remains a major cultural symbol of Kentucky.
