An enlarged replica stands on the site of the original Michael L. Benedum family home, where Benedum was born on 16 July 1869 and where his life began before his death on 30 July 1959. Known as the “Great Wildcatter” for his success in oil exploration, he became equally well known for philanthropy. The Benedum name is prominent in West Virginia for gifts supporting scholarships, educational facilities, and community sites, including this center, which he dedicated in 1956.
