The Middle River Volunteers drilled on this road for service before entering the Civil War on March 4, 1862. Descendants of these soldiers donated the memorial and dedicated it in 1980. The company roster names original Captain Wm P Brown and combat Captain Jack Ragsdale; Lieutenants John Lane, John E Roe, Wm L Martin, W J Sloan, and D S Ragland; Sergeants Jas L Acry, Jas M Caudell, John C Allred, Peter P Chapman, Robt F Ausburn, Alvin D Hooper, Jas C Broom, Chas H Lane, Hugh M Brown, and Wm A Segars; and Corporals Wm B Allred, Wm B Nations, Wm M Blackburn, Francis M Sewell, Jas M Browning, Nathaniel Ward, R C Hardy, Harrison Whitfield, and Jas L Murray.
