Currahee Mountain, near Toccoa in Stephens County, Georgia, is a solitary peak whose Cherokee-derived name means “stand alone.” The highest point in the county, it rises sharply above the surrounding foothills and has long served as a visible landmark. It figured in the Treaty of Hopewell, later helped define the Hawkins Line, and saw a small Civil War clash in October 1864 at the Battle of the Narrows, or Battle of Currahee. In the Second World War, Camp Toccoa at its base trained Army paratroopers from 1942 to 1946, making Currahee a lasting military symbol as well as a historic and recreational destination.
