Roger Hooker and Keziah Leavitt's homestead was the home of Roger and Chloe Maxwell Leavitt, the parents of Roger Hooker. Roger served as president of the Franklin County Anti-Slavery Society in 1836 and as vice president of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society in 1838-39. From 1838 to 1844, the site served as a safe house for Basil and Louisa Dorsey and their children, Freedom Seekers from Liberty, Maryland. The Leavitt family played a significant, though not solitary, role in the active anti-slavery movement of Western Massachusetts.
