Massaemett Mountain in Shelburne, Massachusetts, named for Chief Massaemett of the Pocumtuck, rises above the historic Mohawk Trail corridor that linked the Connecticut and Hudson River valleys long before the modern road. Its most notable feature is a stone fire tower built in 1909 from rock quarried on the mountain, replacing earlier towers and later adapted for forest fire detection. The tower, now Massachusetts State Tower #40, remains active and is one of only two active stone fire towers in New England. Much of the mountain is protected within Shelburne State Forest and the High Ledges Wildlife Sanctuary, with maintained trails leading to the summit.
