The Bank of Vernal, now Zions First National Bank, was built in 1916 with decorative brick shipped to Vernal brick by brick through the U.S. Post Office. A total of 5,000 packages weighing 50 pounds each were sent from Salt Lake City by parcel post because it cost half the normal freight rate, with postage of seven cents per brick. In 1916, receiving a parcel post shipment took about 4 days. The brick traveled 309 miles by the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railway to Mack, Colorado, then continued 63 miles north on the narrow gauge Uintah Railway up the steepest railroad grade in North America to Watson. From Watson, the brick was loaded onto 17 six-horse wagons for the 2-day, 60-mile trip through Devil's Playground and over the Alhandra River Ferry to Vernal. The building used 250,000 pounds of mail-ordered brick, was remodeled in the 1960's, purchased by Zions First National Bank Corp. in 1968, and restored in 1995 to again reflect the elegant architectural style of the early 1900's.
