Sharon Johnston Park in north Madison County, Alabama, near New Market, is a more than 250-acre public recreation area with a fishing lake, sports fields, campground facilities, picnic areas, and seasonal swimming. Developed in the 1970s by the Madison County Commission under chairman James Record, it was dedicated on June 4, 1979, after the Johnston family donated the land. The park honors Sharon Johnston, a pilot who died in 1974 while performing at a Massachusetts airshow. Long meaningful to her family for its lake and wildlife, the property became both a memorial landscape and a heavily used community park that also hosts annual events.
