Badger Mountain in central Washington, east of the Columbia River and northeast of Wenatchee, is the highest point in Douglas County and part of the Columbia Plateau. Its recorded naming history reaches at least to the early nineteenth century. Edmond S. Meany proposed that the “Mt. St. Pierre” named by Lieutenant Johnson during the United States Exploring Expedition in 1841 was probably this mountain. Its present name came from settlers and refers to the native badger. The mountain also serves recreation, with the Badger Mountain Ski Area on its northeastern flank, linking the site to the region’s geography, settlement-era naming, and outdoor use.
