Henry Clinton Young (1794 - 1875), a Laurensville attorney, gave Clinton its name and planned its original streets. The city was chartered four times, in 1852, 1864, 1886, and 1890. Young also served as a Major in the South Carolina State Militia, as a member of the State House of Representatives and a State Senator from 1842-1856, and as Director of the Laurens Railroad.
