Anderson Mesa Station, established in 1959 southeast of Flagstaff as Lowell Observatory’s dark-sky observing site, became a major center of observational astronomy as Lowell expanded beyond Mars Hill. About 12 miles from the main campus, it offered darker skies and accumulated instruments with varied histories, including the Perkins Telescope, the John Hall Telescope, a former U.S. Geological Survey telescope used for Project Apollo, and the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer. The site also linked Lowell to planetary discovery and asteroid searches: Clyde Tombaugh’s Pluto Discovery Telescope stood there from 1971 to 1992, and the LONEOS Schmidt camera supported the observatory’s Near-Earth-Object Search into 2008.
