Wilmot Mountain, in southeastern Wisconsin near the Illinois border, developed into a longstanding Midwestern ski hill known for its broad, open slope, modest vertical drop, and appeal to visitors from Wisconsin and the Chicago region. Founded in 1938 by Walter Stopa as Wilmot Hills, it began with a rope tow and later added snowmaking, a chairlift, expanded dining and tubing facilities, and a newer lodge. The mountain supports skiing, snowboarding, tubing, night skiing, instruction, and racing, with a long slalom tradition. From 1954 to 1967, the grounds also included a motor-racing circuit. After decades of family ownership, it was sold to Vail Resorts in 2016, followed by major renovations.
