On September 25th, 1951, a group of artists met in Marquette to plan the formation of the Lake Superior Creative Arts Association, which later became the Lake Superior Art Association. In 1959, the association established Art on the Rocks, an annual art fair first held under the statue of Father Marquette on these black rocks, where 35 artists showed their work.
