About 1800, Archibald Prather (Prater), John Williams, Ebenezer Hanna, Clayton Cook, and other emigrants originally from South Carolina settled here. Some of them had attempted to settle here in 1794 but were driven back by Indians. They founded Licking Station on a hill in a horseshoe bend of the Licking River, which provided a good defense against the Indians.
