Captain Huck and some of his men tried to escape up Williamson's Lane as several Patriot riflemen fired at them. Captain Huck was hit and fell from his saddle, dead. John Carroll of Fishing Creek was given credit for firing the shot that killed the British commander. The battle lasted about 15 minutes, but 30 British and Loyalist soldiers were killed and another 50 were wounded and captured. The Patriots had only one casualty. Patriot militiaman John Craig recalled pursuing the dragoons with John Carroll leading the way and Charles Miles beside them, and said that when they halted to fire, Miles and Carroll fired at the same time and brought down the captain of the British dragoons, though it was decided that Carroll killed him.
