Hyndman Peak, at 12,012 feet, is the highest summit in Idaho’s Pioneer Mountains and the highest point in both Sawtooth National Forest and Blaine County, on the border with Custer County. The mountain is named for Major William Hyndman, an early settler and businessperson in the local mining industry. Its first recorded ascent, by W. T. Griswold and E. T. Perkins in 1889, ties it to the early exploration and development of central Idaho. Known for its broad alpine setting and relatively accessible class 2 standard route from the Sun Valley area, it has become one of Idaho’s notable high summits and a popular hiking destination.
