Bald Mountain, a 9,121-foot peak beside Ketchum in Blaine County, is one of the higher summits in Idaho’s Smoky Mountains and the defining mountain above the Sun Valley area. Within Sawtooth National Forest, it became the main ski mountain of the Sun Valley resort when lift-served skiing began there in the winter of 1939–40. Known for long runs on a steady pitch, varied terrain, and relatively little wind, it has a 3,400-foot vertical drop, 75 runs, and extensive lift capacity. Though it has appeared in popular culture as an erupting volcano, in reality it remains one of Idaho’s best-known ski peaks.
