Roosevelt Campobello International Park preserves the Roosevelt family’s summer retreat on Campobello Island, New Brunswick, including the Shingle Style cottage completed in 1897 and the surrounding grounds, gardens, and outbuildings. Given to Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt in 1908, it became a beloved family summer home and was the site of the paralytic illness that struck Franklin in August 1921, leaving him permanently paralyzed from the waist down. After later ownership by Armand Hammer, the property was deeded to Canada and the United States and became a 2,800-acre international park in 1964, jointly managed as both a historic site and a symbol of cross-border cooperation.
