The proprietors of Berkely Hundred instructed Captain John Woodleefe, the first "Captayne and Governor" of Berkeley Hundred, Virginia, that the day their ship arrived at the place assigned for plantation in Virginia was to be kept yearly and perpetually holy as a day of Thanksgiving to Almighty God.
