In December 1619, Captain John Woodleefe and thirty-five settlers arrived at Berkeley Hundred, Virginia, on the ship Margaret, and the proprietors of Berkeley Hundred ordained that the day of arrival be observed annually as the first official Thanksgiving Day in America.
