Lake Shore Church began in 1922, when a group of women formed a Ladies Aid Society on May 5 and soon started a Sunday School. On December 14, 1922, the congregation incorporated, elected officers, and purchased land where the men of the congregation built the first church building, which was dedicated for Sunday morning worship on September 30, 1923. Within a year, membership had grown to 25 adults and 18 children, and in the early years worshippers arrived by foot, horse-drawn carriage, and automobile. When the original building could no longer accommodate the growing congregation, a new chapel was built and dedicated in June 1941, while the original building became the public library of the Village of St. Clair Shores. At the onset of World War II, the pastor and many men of the congregation entered national service, but the congregation and Sunday School endured and thrived. In the 1950s, as Lake Shore Presbyterian grew along with St. Clair Shores, another new building became necessary, and in 1960 a new sanctuary was added, followed later in the decade by a Christian Education wing. During the 1960s and 1970s, the church developed a youth ministry called The Catacombs that drew young people from across the city for fellowship and live music on Friday nights. It remained strong through the rest of the 20th century with expanding outreach and youth and camping experiences, then grew further in the 21st century with the construction of the Welcome Center, whose floor-to-ceiling windows symbolized an outward focus and invitation to the community. In 2022 and 2023, Lake Shore Church marked its centennial with five celebrations and launched the Second Century Dream capital campaign to renew its commitment to worship, youth ministry, and service in St. Clair Shores, where it has been part of the community for more than 100 years.
