Music has been recorded and heard in several formats over the years. LP records were introduced in 1948, when music was recorded on vinyl records and played on record machines with needles. Compact cassettes, or tapes, were introduced in 1963 and allowed people to record their own music. 8-track analog tape became a popular media format in 1965, letting listeners skip positions on the track, though not always to the beginning of songs. Compact discs for music were created in 1982 by Sony and are still used today. Digital audio files, like the MP3, were introduced in 1995, and today people use digital audio files to listen to music on iPods, smartphones, and computers. Music also belongs to genres, categories based on shared conventions, including classical, blues, rock, country, rap, latin, and pop. Music can be made with computers and other electronic devices or by playing a musical instrument.
