Melrose Park, Illinois · The Underground Railroad
History
3
Many Black slaves fled from the antebellum South and gained their freedom by secretly traveling the Underground Railroad route during the mid 1800's. In that era, a Ten Mile Freedom House on this site provided shelter for Underground Railroad travelers. It was razed in 1927. The site honors the men and women who courageously participated in the Underground Railroad freedom quest.
